Wellness Tips from my Kitchen

Wellness Rituals

Here’s a few wellness tips from my kitchen that I hope you find helpful.

When it comes to tempered glass food storage containers, Pyrex is king!  It’s my ‘go-to’ for food storage. Each Pyrex container comes with a silicone lid and are also resistant to heat and cold.   Check to make sure the lids are LFGB certification (food save).

Punting Plastics to the Curb

Years back I chucked all my plastic kitchen storage containers to avoid hazardous chemicals and microplastics that can leech into food. This can especially occur with fatty and acidic foods. If  hot food is placed in a plastic container, heat will speed up the release of chemicals that disrupt the endocrine system.  It is also worth noting that bacteria may live inside scratches in the plastic.

Ditching Unsafe Cookware

The other major change I made in my kitchen was the removal of pots and pans coated with synthetic chemicals. They are marketed as ‘non-stick’ for easy cleaning however they are subject to unhealthy heat and surface damage.

As an alternative, I explored ceramic cookware as it sounded safe, yet it is also subject to heat and surface damage.

I finally chose stainless steel pots and pans along with a wonderful cast iron skillet.

Side-Note: There are health benefits associated with cast iron skillets.  First off, they’re great for cooking food evenly. They require less oil than other cookware as the oil naturally builds so food doesn’t stick to the pan. Cast iron skillets offer a natural way to obtain a small supplemental dose of iron that transfers to the food.  This affordable ‘workhorse” will last you for many years.  Cast iron frying pans clean up easily too!
