Breathing Consciousness
By Diane Robert
While I was participating in a yoga session a few years back, the teacher noticed that I was inhaling through my mouth. Mouth breathing is common during exertion or congestion, but it can cause developmental problems if used regularly. It could impact dental health and even cause a receding chin during childhood.
I started exploring proper breathing techniques on Google and became more aware of my breathing patterns. I came across the website of Patrick McKeown, Founder of a breathwork school and a globally recognized breathing specialist. He is the author of the popular book entitled “The Oxygen Advantage.” His teachings have changed millions of lives all over the world. Discover how to “improve performance, resilience, and health through better breathing.” It is designed for everyday people plus athletes of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to pros. Simply stated, this book is a must-have.
To strengthen the beneficial habit of nasal breathing, I engaged in mouth taping at night and nasal breathing during the day. I began to enjoy a restful restorative night’s sleep. For more information on this topic, I recommend viewing Patrick McKeown’s website and videos. Also, check out “Mouth Breathing,” available on the Cleveland Clinic website.
